うらこうさく【裏工作】

maneuvering behind the scenes; secret goings-on; a backstairs deal; backroom deals; 《口》 fixing.

●あれほど法案に反対していたあの政党が急に方針を変えるなんて, 何か裏工作があったに違いない. The party changed its fierce opposition to the bill so suddenly that there must have been some secret maneuvering behind the scenes.

●政府の高官たちは交渉成功のため裏工作に奔走した. Senior government officials maneuvered desperately behind the scenes to make the negotiations succeed.

●裏工作をする[行う]調整者のことを「フィクサー」と呼ぶ. People who arrange matters [iron things out, settle conflicts] behind the scenes are called “fixers.”
